A short-pulse and high-intensity laser hits the metal surface, and makes the ablative layer on the workpiece surface to absorb the laser energy and generates a rapid-expanding plasma wave. The effects of the plasma shockwave can change the microstructure of the workpiece surface and create a compressive residual stress with depth below the workpiece surface. Thus the metal property in preventing fatigue failure, fighting foreign object damage (FOD) and resisting fretting abrasion can be improved effectively.
